Conference details and theme
Now entering its 23nd year, this flagship UTIHP conference seeks to create a dialogue on the status of healthcare accessibility and where to go from here, especially with our renewed understanding of human rights discrepancies due to the pandemic. Our mandate is to “Engage, Connect, and Contribute" and we do so by bringing together tomorrow’s physicians, public health professionals, pharmacists, nurses, lawyers, policymakers and NGO workers to begin working towards a better world.
Recognizing the challenges in accessing healthcare highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 HHR conference will focus on the theme of the Future of Healthcare Accessibility. The conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to delve into how the future of healthcare may change following the pandemic, and how lack of resources may limit accessibility to some individuals. We will discuss the current issues and questions, and future solutions, considerations and innovations.
The delegates will also get interactive experiences at the conference through our virtual breakout sessions, a volunteer fair and a research poster fair. The conference will be an exciting opportunity for students and professionals alike to bounce off ideas about the future and innovation of the healthcare system and learn from each other’s knowledge and experience. We welcome students from all backgrounds and years to participate in our conference.

ABOUT HEALTHCARE ACCESSIBILITY
According to the WHO, there are 4 main components of healthcare accessibility. These are:

Physical accessibility: which consists of availability of quality health services within a reasonable distance of those in need. This also includes safe and attainable health care. There is a special focus on vulnerable groups, such as BIPOC, rural communities, women, children, elderly, and people with disabilities.

Economic accessibility: this is determined by a person's ability to receive services without financial hardship, and takes into account not only the price of the health care, but also the indirect costs (such as transportation, and taking time away from work)

Information accessibility: which relates to the right to seek and receive information around health issues
Our conference will discuss these aspects of healthcare accessibility, especially through the current lens of COVID-19, health inequities and their link to human rights.
